Sen. Moran Statement on VA OIG Reports Regarding Military Sexual Trauma

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) – the lead Republican on the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee – today released the following statement after the Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) Office of Inspector General (OIG) published two reports concerning Military Sexual Trauma (MST):

“The VA has a duty to quickly and accurately resolve claims for compensation benefits – especially for veterans experiencing military sexual trauma. It is both disappointing and disturbing that the OIG report revealed more and more veterans’ claims related to military sexual trauma continue to be improperly denied. A 2018 OIG report offered recommendations for how the Veterans Benefits Administration could reduce or eliminate these decision errors, but leadership failed to implement these changes, and the problem has become worse.

“VA leaders must do their part to both acknowledge problems when identified and then follow through on their commitments to enact reforms. As ranking member of the Senate VA Committee, I will be tracking VA’s progress in implementing the recommendations from the Inspector General’s latest report so our veterans receive the care and benefits they are due.”
