WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Daniel K. Akaka (D-HI), Chairman of the Veterans' Affairs Committee, received an "A+" from the non-partisan Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) Action Fund for his leadership and voting record on Iraq and Afghanistan veterans' issues.  Akaka received 9 out of 9 possible points for voting, plus two additional points for his co-sponsorship of the 21st Century GI Bill of Rights. 

"I am humbled and gratified to be recognized by the newest generation of American veterans," said Akaka.  "I am proud of what we were able to accomplish this Congress for the veterans of the current conflicts, and for those who served in previous eras.  I look forward to doing even more in the coming years." 

Prior to assuming the Chairmanship of the Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee, Akaka was the top ranking Democrat on the Committee from 2004 to 2006.  He served during World War II in the Army Corps of Engineers, and attended college on the original GI Bill of Rights.
